Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce Reaction to 2026 Federal Economic Update

Medicine Hat, AB – April 30, 2026

The Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce says the federal government’s 2026 Economic Update reinforces the need for businesses to plan for resilience amid ongoing cost pressures, labour challenges, and economic uncertainty.

The update outlines a focus on workforce development, infrastructure, domestic trade, and long‑term competitiveness. While no broad income tax reductions were announced, the measures outlined will influence payroll costs, labour mobility, and investment activity over the coming years.

“This update reflects the reality our members are dealing with every day,” said Aaron Fleming, Board President of the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce. “While it’s encouraging to see recognition of payroll and workforce pressures, regional businesses need policies and regulatory environments that improve competitiveness today and in the future.”

Fleming noted that Southeast Alberta businesses operate in sectors highly sensitive to fuel costs, workforce availability, and regulatory complexity.

“Investment is important, but competitiveness is built through practical changes,” he said. “Reducing red tape, improving tax competitiveness, and eliminating internal trade barriers will have the biggest impact for businesses across our region.”

Prairies Economic Development Canada has emphasized export diversification, internal trade, and industrial growth across Western Canada, supported by recent increases in exports to non‑U.S. markets and upcoming initiatives aimed at improving market access and reducing interprovincial barriers.

The Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce has released a new Advocacy Insights article outlining what the Economic Update means for local businesses and practical steps employers can take now.
